@BETT_show BETT

Welcome to today’s #BETTChat – how do we define innovation in education? Is it the technology or potential for learning improvement?

@BETT_show BETT

We’re pleased to welcome Ray Barker of @besatweet to today’s #BETTChat

@besatweet BESA

#BETTChat BETT Awards judges always argue about ‘innovation’. What does it look like in terms of ICT products?

@russellprue Russell Prue

Hello to Ray Barker how the devil are you? #BETTChat innovation=doing something in an innovative way for the first time, possibly cheaper

@contactgroup Contact Group

Innovation in education is anything that enables school to run more efficiently #BETTChat

@pazzy_21 Vicki Louise Cole

@besatweet I think the term innovation has been branded around in #edtech & misused – people often mean different things by it #BETTChat

@russellprue Russell Prue

#BETTChat has started everyone, just pile-on and get stuck-in, great topics on offer today, no such thing as a wrong answer, collaboration!

@MsEmilyBird Emily Bird

Innovation is the old adage of using the right tool for the right thing and making the learning process more engaging #BETTChat

@besatweet BESA

#BETTChat The first time Russell!? Is it something new and quirky – or is it doing something in a new way? Better or cheaper?

@besatweet BESA

#BETTChat All those different things that innovation means to people or product developers – what are they?

@vocabexpress Vocab Express

#BETTChat Innovation is about turning something on its head – looking at things in a new way that’s not been done beforehand

@ClaireAshton Claire Ashton

#BETTChat innovation must make a difference to outcomes and not just be for innovations sake. Like last week’s chat about technology

@besatweet BESA

#BETTChat Is it about innovation in the learning process then? Does it matter that the product is not fantastically original?

@Peter_Porpoise Pete Johnson

if you reinvent wheel to provide a better wheel – is that innovation? #BETTChat

@bartoneducation Ben Barton

#BETTchat It’s all about the learning. Innovation maybe using dice to teach addition skills or building rockets to explain physics.

@bartoneducation Ben Barton

#BETTchat It is doing something in a way that students might not have seen before. Innovating their learning and your teaching.

@PrometheanTweet Promethean

@MsEmilyBird Agreed – technology is a waste of time if not used properly. #BETTchat

@bartoneducation Ben Barton

#BETTchat The worry is that technology often innovates ahead of teachers and children because the guys that make it are so clever.

@pazzy_21 Vicki Louise Cole

@besatweet people can think innovation is just about newness for newness sakes. It’s about shaking things up, but for a purpose  #BETTChat

@simonj62 Simon Johnson

#BETTChat How about a genuine defn not making one up? OED: make changes in something established…by introducing new methods, ideas or prod

@bartoneducation Ben Barton

#BETTchat Origins of the species published today (but a few years ago now). Evolution probably works rather than Innovation.

@MsEmilyBird Emily Bird

Brand new shiny gadgets are not innovative in themselves unless you can adopt and embed them into new ways of thinking & working. #BETTChat

@simonj62 Simon Johnson

@besatweet #BETTChat – surely originality is essential for innovation? Weak definition if not Ray.

@PrometheanTweet Promethean

Seeking innovation in practice should be the focus – not just seeking innovative technologies #BETTchat

@contactgroup Contact Group

Innovative technology can be used to improve learning by streamlining processes & freeing up teacher time to reinvest in class #BETTChat

@simonj62 Simon Johnson

Definitely agree that to be innovative in education a process or product must change the way things are done #BETTChat

@SmartEdFreeTech SmartEd Free-Tech

We’re thankful 4 #BETTChat & being on BETT Radio tomorrow! What are you thankful for? This #video will inspire you: http://bit.ly/tirbHg

@Peter_Porpoise Pete Johnson

Be innovative about how use of technology, no rocket science. Use video to bridge gap between school and home http://www.ashfieldpark.org/curriculum-blog.html #bettchat

@besatweet BESA

#BETTChat Not sure if ‘originality’ is needed if changing practice is the key to innovation?

@russellprue Russell Prue

Awesome chats on #BETTChat, come and join us, this is what the BETT community is all about, live until 5.00pm today, get stuck-in

@besatweet BESA

#BETTChat So how do teachers find out about what is ‘innovative’ at BETT this year? What do people need to do to help them?

@CapitaSIMS Capita SIMS

#BETTChat How do schools know their ‘innovations’ are successful? How are they measured and reported on? How do they gather innovative ideas?

@besatweet BESA

#BETTChat So is ‘innovation’ good in itself for ICT products or do we have to prove it ‘works’ in some way?

@russellprue Russell Prue

#BETTChat Watching seminars with practitioners talking about their journey seems a good thing to do at BETT, recommendations good too

@pazzy_21 Vicki Louise Cole

@russellprue absolutely, there are loads of free on stand seminars/events at BETT too. Teacher would be wise to plan in advance #BETTChat

@CapitaSIMS Capita SIMS

#BETTChat to find out what innovations schools need, they need to consider what issues they want to solve & match IT to them, if appropriate

@russellprue Russell Prue

#BETTChat I think this year, buyers of ICT are looking for more proof than ever before, young people have something important to say too

@mikebrooman Mike Brooman

“Revolution doesn’t happen when society adopts new technologies – it happens when society adopts new behaviours.” – Clay Shirky #BETTchat

 @russellprue Russell Prue

#BETTChat this year Prof. Heppell is organising young explorers to check-out and report of new stuff at BETT asking so what’s this doing 4me

@shane_r Shane Rae

#BETTChat Innovation=creating a solution for someone who may not have realised they had a problem. What teacher thought they needed an IWB?

@besatweet BESA

#BETTChat Absolutely agree about adopting ‘new behaviours’. Does innovation have to be ‘revolution’ though? (Getting deep this!)

@Peter_Porpoise Pete Johnson

wayyyyyy back I worked with 8-11 year olds I gave access to tech, they told me what it did with no instruction #innovatethinking #bettchat

@mikebrooman Mike Brooman

Agree @CapitaSIMS – define requirements and learning / organisation objectives then match technologies to them. Don’t be a magpie! #BETTchat

@CapitaSIMS Capita SIMS

@shane_r #BETTChat And how many teachers actually know or use them properly?

@russellprue Russell Prue

Hello Mike, where’ve you been? #BETTChat, good quote, behaviours that must be the key, is BETT about changing these too?

@mikebrooman Mike Brooman

@besatweet No, it doesn’t have to be through revolution (although it’d be fun!) Evolution would likely lead to better adoption too #BETTchat

@PrometheanTweet Promethean

@russellprue How would kids innovate a new education system? That would be innovative! #BETTchat

@CapitaSIMS Capita SIMS

#BETTChat, does anyone have anything innovative to share? That they’ve seen, heard of or tried?

@russellprue Russell Prue

@PrometheanTweet #BETTChat well you can hear what they say, live on BETT Radio during the show days, because they are going to be telling us

@russellprue Russell Prue

@CapitaSIMS I would hope that every supplier & contributor to BETT has something innovative to share otherwise what’s the point? #BETTChat

 @shane_r Shane Rae

#BETTChat Also, sometimes innovation involves removing complexity! often from a previous ‘innovation’.

@CapitaSIMS Capita SIMS

@russellprue #BETTChat We hope so too. I was asking practitioners as well as suppliers

 @russellprue Russell Prue

@contactgroup take that one step further and get the kids to report on what they see at BETT as innovative, now that’s innovative #BETTChat

@Peter_Porpoise Pete Johnson

Innovate in attitude as well as “product” – listen to the user (pupils and teacher) and what they need #bettchat

@mikebrooman Mike Brooman

@CapitaSIMS @RTStweets collaboration with teachers at an academy resulted in this: http://youtu.be/fYxyYZHUBQw #Innovation #BETTchat

@russellprue Russell Prue

Amazing discussions today on #BETTChat, lots of sideband activity too as everyone has smaller mini-discussions. WOW how collaborative!

@russellprueRussell Prue

@mikebrooman Good example there Mike, Marsh also changed their culture of learning, that I think is essential too #BETTChat

@wiredteachers Wired Teachers

Delighted to be lurking in #BETTChat today, some useful points for educators to help plan their visit to BETT in Jan, only a few weeks away!

@besatweet BESA

#BETTChat Great video Mike – any more examples out there people of how ICT can make real a vision for learning?

@mikebrooman Mike Brooman

@russellprue It wouldn’t have been near that standard without the school’s clear vision for engaging learners using technology #BETTchat

@Serco_Learning Serco Learning

Innovation should meet with the needs of users and collaboration with users is key #BETTChat

@russellprue Russell Prue

Ray, can BESA help by allowing smaller enterprises to join BESA #BETTChat and share in this great advice and support?

@besatweet BESA

#BETTChat The most innovative ICT product in the past 5 years to match our definitions?? … no advertising please!

@besatweet BESA

#BETTChat … Funny you should mention that Russell … BESA now has an ‘Incubator’ company membership scheme to help small companies.

 @jwellsatguroo jwellsatguroo

#BETTCHAT A great book that explains adoption of innovations is Crossing the Chasm by Geoffrey A Moore. Also explains why most things fail

@pazzy_21Vicki Louise Cole

@besatweet Most innovative ICT product? What about Google? free software for collaboration from a trusted resource. Thoughts? #BETTChat

@russellprue Russell Prue

I’ve seen that Digital School Radio has transformed learning opportunities in innovative ways, gr8 choice of providers at the show #BETTChat

@russellprue Russell Prue

  1. I have first time glanced the BETT blog. It is really interesting to me. I would like to add one point. When you talk about innovation, we should also ponder about the beginning of innoavtion—when, where, what, and how innovation introduced in the history of mankind.
