Steve Smith from Capita IT Services looks at implementing Bring your own device solutions for schoolsCAP899 Steve Smith

There has been much debate of late surrounding the advantages of schools embracing the ‘bring your own device’ (BYOD) concept. The discussions have been fuelled by the difficult financial climate and the need to ensure staff and students have access to engaging educational content.

Apart from a few pioneering souls, BYOD in the education sector has very much remained in its infancy. But recent changes have meant BYOD has suddenly become a real possibility for schools.

Fired by an explosion in the availability of affordable tablets, smart phones and ‘apps’, the ability to piggy back on students’ and staff’s own technology is a viable way to increase access to technology in school. Easier and more affordable BYOD management systems are also making it a realistic solution along with increasing expectations from students and staff who want to use the same technology in school that they do at home.

However, to date, some real barriers to BYOD in school have existed – not least network security and device management. How do you ensure access to material is appropriately controlled, that your data cannot be breached and you are at no greater risk from viruses?  And how can your IT staff manage the variety of technology platforms appearing in the tablet market now, and how can teachers cope with their students viewing content on a variety of different devices with different screen sizes and interfaces?

Recent developments mean that schools can now confidently and affordably implement BYOD. One solution, for instance, is software that allows all classroom resources to be accessed via a web browser which manages access rights, converts content to be relevant to the device used and ensures security is controlled centrally and not on the device. This takes the headache out of the process and ensures your school is free to take advantage of BYOD without your IT manager turning into a quivering wreck at the mere mention of an untrusted device being used on the network.

The implications for the school mean greater access to the latest technology and where money is spent on ICT, it can be on more specialist technologies for music, science or design or provided to pupils unable to access their own devices, helping close the digital divide.

This is why BYOD will soon be a consideration for all schools. Access will no longer be confined to anytime and anywhere. It is now anytime, anywhere, any device and any source.

Steve Smith is director of learning at Capita IT Services which offers services and advice to schools considering cloud and BYOD implementations. www.capita-its.co.uk Capita IT services will be on stand B250 at Bett 2013.

Bett‏  @Bett_show

Welcome to today’s #BettChat. Who wants to get us started and share their thoughts on BYOD in education?

Smoothwall‏  @Smoothwall

#BYOD has introduced a whole new set of guidelines and policies into the classroom #websecurity #BettChat

Animate It!‏  @AnimateEducate

We need to empower children to use devices they are used to using every day, not leave them at the gates #BettChat

Animate It!  ‏@AnimateEducate

Typically children take more care of devices that belong to them anyway – #BettChat

Animate It!  ‏@AnimateEducate

@Smoothwall #BettChat And allows them to continue their learning outside the constraints of the school building!

WebBased  ‏@WebBasedLtd

BYOD will help to improve student engagement & enhance teaching and learning! #BettChat

Nick Novak‏  @NicholasNovak

How do we also make sure to bridge the gap for those without devices to bring? This is equally important. #bettchat #BYOD

Smoothwall  ‏@Smoothwall

Insights from Raleigh, North Carolina Tools like Socrative – a great way to engage students. Thanks Mr Miles http://bitly.com/SeSImP #BettChat

Dave Kelly‏  @DavKellyPro

Taking part in @Bett_show #BettChat. What do you think of #BYOD? I think positive – caveats: training, planning, and preventing disadvantage

InfoMentor UK‏  @infomentoruk

You also have to consider who supports the devices if technical problems occur in the classroom #Bettchat #BYOD

Ergo Computing‏  @ergocomputing

Interesting topic… the spotlight will definitely be on Wireless and Security #BYOD #BettChat

eInstructionApacEmea‏  @eInstruction_uk

It can be argued if children are already familiar with the workings of the tech, then it is easier/quicker to use it for learning #BettChat

Nick Novak‏  @NicholasNovak

@eInstruction_uk Agreed. Much easier that we think. #bettchat

Animate It!‏  @AnimateEducate

@eInstruction_uk Not only familiar, if they are #BYOD then it is likely to be a device they enjoy using too…. #BettChat

Smoothwall‏  @Smoothwall

@NicholasNovak Good point! When budgets allow buy extra devices for those without.. #Bettchat

Ergo Computing  ‏@ergocomputing

Really good article on #BYOD posted by @C4LPT http://c4lpt.co.uk/2012/08/janes-pick-of-the-day-12-august-2012/ … #BettChat

Daydream Education  ‏@DaydreamEdu

Join in with #bettchat! Today’s topic: what are your thoughts on BYOD in education?

Smoothwall‏  @Smoothwall

Feedback from the classroom – “All in all, I have seen an increased desired to participate, learn & engage”. http://bit.ly/SeSImP #BettChat

Capita SIMS‏  @CapitaSIMS

BYOD doesn’t have to be for the whole school, it can be for specific year groups. Maybe the sixth form #BETTChat

Animate It!‏  @AnimateEducate

View from train on way from Newcastle while trying to take part in #BettChat pic.twitter.com/j1u5NZH5

Dave Kelly  ‏@DavKellyPro

The beauty of #BYOD is that kids don’t need to be taught how to use them. Aside, this was VERY interesting… http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_9765000/9765200.stm … #bettchat

Altman Technologies‏  @AlTLtd

BYOD has to be good, easier for children to engage when using their own devices. Just need to make sure activity is monitored. #BettChat

Louise Golding-Hann‏  @LGHDLD

@Bett_show Students have lots of technology and they *want* to use it. Works well for us, we have dedicated desks to include power supplies. #BettChat

Altman Technologies‏  @AlTLtd

@capitasims sounds like a good idea. Leave it until they get to 6th Form when they can hopefully be more trusted. #BettChat

Malcolm Wilson‏  @claganach

@Bett_show: resources here may be useful for schools moving to BYOD http://glo.li/NWgGQT #BettChat

Dave Kelly  ‏@DavKellyPro

@CapitaSIMS I’d argue that you could start earlier, though. Year 11 experientially seems likely to have personal smart tech #BettChat #BYOD

WebBased‏  @WebBasedLtd

@NicholasNovak I agree, not everyone is fortunate to have mobile devices so how do we ensure #BYOD doesn’t alienate some students #bettchat

Smoothwall‏  @Smoothwall

BYOD is a major challenge for ICT managers. We interviewed admins to establish issues with safe web access http://bitly.com/RB9Ll1 #BettChat

Academia Ltd‏  @AcademiaLtd

#BettChat we have experience on delivering 1:1 #BYOD solutions to education. Great example is @deFerrersiPad Speak to @apple_academia

Daydream Education  ‏@DaydreamEdu

#bettchat BYOD can be viewed as helping with tight budgets within schools, and ultimately – it’s education!

Frog‏  @frogtrade

We have had our own frogchat on BYOD it was very popular you can read the results here http://tinyurl.com/c3ru38q #BettChat #Frog

Nick Novak‏  @NicholasNovak

@DavKellyPro Yes! Very similar to the work of Sugata Mltra in India. Kids figure it out. #bettchat http://www.ted.com/talks/sugata_mitra_the_child_driven_education.html …

Capita SIMS‏  @CapitaSIMS

@stpaulscatholic has for several years leased devices to its students and this year is trialing iPads in year 10 #BETTChat

Altman Technologies‏  @AlTLtd

What legal considerations (if any) need to be planned for when initiating a BYOD scheme? If an item gets stolen, whose responsible? #BettChat

LapSafe Products‏  @LapSafe

BYOD is a great way to motivate students to take learning outside of the classroom -important to have a usage policy in place! #BettChat

Altman Technologies  ‏@AlTLtd

@webbasedltd great point, it’s an interesting dilemma. #BettChat

Daydream Education‏  @DaydreamEdu

#BYOD #bettchat With hardware so diverse, how do schools make the decision on what to spend their tech budget on?

Dave Kelly  ‏@DavKellyPro

@AlTLtd Absolutely – it’s crucial, I think, to redirect money saved into providing pooled tech for those who can’t. #byod. #bettchat

Daydream Education‏  @DaydreamEdu

@NicholasNovak Sharing! Another positive outcome of #byod! #bettchat

Altman Technologies  ‏@AlTLtd

What is stopping schools from introducing BYOD? Budget, security, lack of engagement? What has anyone seen in the field? #BettChat

Dave Kelly‏  @DavKellyPro

@DaydreamEdu A much wider issue – how have schools ever made that decision? Desktop/laptop, Mac/PC…! Horses for courses? #byod #BettChat

Dave Kelly‏  @DavKellyPro

@AlTLtd Absolutely. Moreover, most teachers won’t give it a whirl until this is in place, for fear of. #BYOD needs pioneers, too #BettChat

Daydream Education‏  @DaydreamEdu

@DavKellyPro an excellent and valid point. #bettchat #byod

WebBased‏  @WebBasedLtd

@AlTLtd Good point, one that many parents I’m sure would want to know before allowing #byod into schools #BettChat

Academia Ltd‏  @AcademiaLtd

Smoothwall‏  @Smoothwall

@DavKellyPro @Bett_show Were the pupils with the provided tech confident in it’s use? Also, how did you secure the devices? #Bettchat

Altman Technologies  @AlTLtd

A lot of our partners have worked with schools to introduce BYOD, but haven’t done case studies yet, which is a shame. #BettChat

Dave Kelly‏  @DavKellyPro

@Smoothwall @bett_show With some basic lessons, quickly confident. We didn’t, oddly – just explained boundaries and gave trust. #BettChat
