@BETT_show BETT

Welcome to today’s #BETTChat. The topic is: the potential of using handheld/portable devices in the classroom.

@Limitless_Ltd Limitless Learning

Looking forward to RT @bett_show: #BETTChat in 5 mins! Join us then to discuss the potential of handheld/portable devices in the classroom

@iansyst iansyst

Accessibility helps all: handheld devices enable SEN pupils to access preferred technologies they are used to using at home #BETTChat

@iansyst iansyst

As a result, handheld devices could potentially be of benefit to all pupils in the classroom #BETTChat

@CapitaSIMS Capita SIMS

Are any of the schools following today’s #BETTChat using handheld devices in school or enabling youngsters to use their own?

RT @capitasims: Are any of the schools following today’s #BETTChat using handheld devices in school or enabling youngsters to use their own?

@SarahMarksPR Sarah Marks

Had interesting chat with some students yesterday – most believed handheld devices would be the next big thing in the classroom. #BETTChat

@iansyst iansyst

@SarahMarksPR Suppliers must look to create software that is accessible across all platforms to address the increasing popularity #BETTChat

@EspressoEd Espresso Education

#BETTChat Using handhelds tends to be a good extension of more traditional learning activities – we’ve had some great podcasting examples

@iansyst iansyst

By incorporating assistive technology into the iOS system, Apple has given AT providers a range of tools to build on #BETTChat

@Groupcall Groupcall

What specific problems/needs will using handheld devices in schools address? #BETTChat

@ParentMail ParentMail

Handheld devices have great potential outside the classroom too. Management can benefit from working on the move around school #BETTChat

@DRescigno Don Rescigno

@iansyst @SarahMarksPR Developing for all platforms is the trickiest part–they are constantly changing and operate differently. #BETTchat

@GLI_Simon Simon Calderbank

@Groupcall will they not get the attention of the child – information direct to the learner, inside and outside the classroom #BETTChat

@iansyst iansyst

@DRescigno It is and something we are trying to address with our latest project, MyDocStore http://bit.ly/tQF0c7 #BETTChat

@BETT_show BETT

We’re talking right now about the use of handhelds – get involved and let us know what you think by using/following the hashtag #BETTChat

@niraj5hah Niraj Shah

Appetite for handhelds in education is to do with 1)accessibility/reach 2)bringing content to life – this is what we are hearing #BETTchat

@iansyst iansyst

@niraj5hahAccessibility and usability go hand in hand and improvements for those with disabilities can assist all in the classroom #BETTChat

@ClickView DannyDanny Smith

#BETTChat With ClickView 2 we will be launching iPad / iPhone Player app – we felt this would be vital with emergence of handheld devices.

@CapitaSIMS Capita SIMS

Are any schools writing their own Apps? I know @ChickenSaltash wrote a timetable app for students to complete #BETTChat

@Limitless_Ltd Limitless Learning

Any thoughts on which ages most benefit from handheld devices in class? #BETTChat

@niraj5hah Niraj Shah

@Limitless_Ltd interested if anyone’s done a study on that – I know of toddlers who are learning to use tablets at nursery.. #BETTchat

@Limitless_Ltd Limitless Learning

@niraj5hah There’s a lot of talk about early years usage and benefits for certain special needs, but less for older children. #BETTChat

@niraj5hah Niraj Shah

@Limitless_Ltd secondary schools are looking into it too, esp the reach aspect – such a new field its hard to know actual benefits #BETTChat

@EleanorJohnson5 Eleanor Johnson

@Limitless_Ltd I would be very interested to find out more about EY use and benefits, can you pass on more info please. #BETTChat

@Limitless_Ltd Limitless Learning

@eleanorjohnson5 There are many small, anecdotal reports – some we’ve Tweeted. Not aware of any wide-scale research yet. #BETTChat

@Mysta_K MisterK

@Turner_Tweets hi… Teachers are following too. #BETTChat

@Mysta_K MisterK

@Limitless_Ltd I think it’s getting younger, my daughter 10 now, moves between my smartphone, iPad and laptop with no hesitation #BETTChat

@Mysta_K MisterK

I think schools are quite fearful of misuse/abuse using handhelds, esp students own, which is what is slowing integration #BETTChat

@niraj5hah Niraj Shah

@Mysta_K great point – moderation in schools is a huge issue – immediate opportunities seem to be in non-academic education. #BETTChat

@Teaching_LMP LittleMissPip

@mysta_k I agree. Not sure how to tell someone off for using a phone one minute and then ask them to get them to use it the next #BETTChat

@Mysta_K MisterK

Chatting 2 a colleague in the states using twitter during lessons to gain feedback and dialogue with students…and out of school #BETTChat

@Teaching_LMP LittleMissPip

@mysta_k I’m still torn. I see the benefits – but think the boundaries are still too blurred #BETTChat

@Mysta_K MisterK

@Teaching_LMP same here! The issues regarding eSafety become more pronounced when students are given more access with handhelds #BETTChat

@Teaching_LMP LittleMissPip

@mysta_k Very good point – I hadn’t even got that far with my thinking! #BETTChat

@Mysta_K MisterK

Laptop, android tablet or iPad for the class room? Aim: to have whole class interaction. We’re deciding on what replace ours with #BETTChat

@Mysta_K MisterK

@Teaching_LMP we’ve recently changed our mobile phone policy to promote positive and safe usage at school, results have been good #BETTChat

@Mysta_K MisterK

@Teaching_LMP we were all so worried, but felt we had to adapt. V encouraging. Having said that, not checked YouTube yet lol #BETTChat

@lewis892 Lewis Hall

@lewis892Lewis Hall

#BETTChat Handheld devices are great for instant access to the web, quiz using eClicker, fantastic communication between students and staff.
